If the big “C” word
Fellow Officers and members of Blue Knights TX, XXXIII,
Hope this finds you all doing well. It seems that recently there have been several of our members and family members dealing with the disease of CANCER.
If the big "C" word has not entered your life or some one close to you, it will. My wife was diagnosis three years ago with Breast Cancer. There was no one else in our family that had ever experienced this, so we were lost and very scared. There weren't many places to turn, other than the doctors for support.
Suzanna is three years out and doing great. Through chemotherapy and radiation she is now currently cancer free. A Survivor!
We recently went through some training as volunteers for Can Care and would like to share a few things, that I believe would be helpful for all, as the big "C" word may cross your path with a loved one, fellow officer or yourself.
"How to Help a Cancer Survivor"
- Be Positive
- Listen
- Remember cancer affects the whole family
Love and support
- Pray
- Express honest feelings-tears are O.K.
- Use the word CANCER
- Offer specific help
- Be sensitive to short, upbeat phone calls and visits.
Ten Things Cancer Patients Would Rather NOT HEAR
- "My____________ had a type of cancer and died."
- "You must see Dr. X, go to hospital Y and Z vitamins, medication, etc."
- "It could be worse - no horror stories"
You should feel lucky!
- "If you pray, God will answer your prayers."
You MUST take charge of you health care!
- "I will help you live, but I will not help you die!"
- "It will be okay"
